Julie Maree Wood holds a Master of Human Nutrition and is a current PhD candidate and scholarship recipient at Deakin University’s Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN). Julie’s master’s thesis focussed on the secondary school food environment.

Julie’s PhD research is entitled, Nourishment in a New Home. It focusses on food security issues amongst recently-arrived refugees settling in high-income countries. Globally, food insecurity is a growing issue amongst refugee populations and, compared to other high-income countries, Australia has one of the highest per-capita intakes of refugees. Further insight into the food security issues amongst the refugees populations is vital to ensure successful settlement outcomes for these vulnerable populations.

As part of the first stage of her PhD, Julie developed a model of refugee food insecurity. The model was peer-reviewed and subsequently published in the tier one academic journal, Public Health Nutrition.
